How It Started
The first San Diego UnderSea Film Exhibition was organized in 2000 by a small group who had been meeting at Chuck Nicklin’s dive shop to share information on shooting and editing underwater video. In the past twenty years, it has grown into one of the most prestigious underwater film festivals worldwide. Our venue is held at state-of-the-art Qualcomm Hall, and both nights routinely sell out with over 500 people each night.
Our approach includes affordable tickets, cash prizes for audience favorites, and films selection by a panel of independent judges who are distinguished in their fields.
Among renowned videographers whose work has been showcased are Howard and Michele Hall, Flip Nicklin, Leandro Blanco, Terry Maas, Shawn Heinrichs, and Simon Spear.

Board of Directors
SDUFEX is a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization. All officers and members of the Board of Directors are volunteers, and most are active underwater videographers. We are here to promote and exhibit creative underwater filmmaking; to share underwater cinematography and techniques among divers; and to encourage awareness about marine life and ocean habitats.
